Jackall Buzzard

The historic Giant's Castle Game Reserve, home of the Eland and the majestic Bearded Vulture, lies in the Central Berg region of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage Site. Giant's Castle camp is situated on a grassy plateau among the deep valleys running down from the face of the High Drakensberg, offering glorious views of the craggy mountain face. Apart from the spectacular scenery, the main attraction from a bird photographic perspective is the Lammergeyer Hide, the oldest vulture restaurant in the world and the arguably the best place to photograph the majestic Bearded Vulture. The birds are regular visitors to the hide and it offers great opportunities to photograph this elusive species both perched and in flight.

Other species that can be seen from the hide are Cape Vultures, Jackal Buzzards, Verreauxs’ Eagles and White-necked Ravens, all of which can be photographed from a close distance.

During quiet moments, you can while away the time by photographing several small bird species which are attracted to the meat scraps left by the large raptors. These include Cape Rock Thrush, Sentinel Rock Trush, Buff-streaked Chat and Red-winged Starling. The tiny Drakensberg Prinia is also a regular visitor, often fighting furiously with his reflection in the reflective glass panels of the hide!

The size of the party is restricted to two photographers with partners. We keep the party small in order to maximize photographic opportunities for the participants.

We will stay in Giant’s Castle rest camp in a comfortable guest house with a fire place and a large dining room table with enough space for laptops where the post processing will be conducted under the watchful eye of either Albert or Chris, one of which will be your expert guide for the duration of your stay. Both of them have spent many hours in the hide and will make sure that you not only get the most out of the opportunities at the hide, but also get the benefit of years of experience in the post processing of photographs with Photoshop. Please note that the workshop fees do not include meals.
