This is a instructional photo safari offering four photographer guests (with partners if they so wish) the opportunity to explore deep into the spectacular Kgalagadi Transfrontier National park. This is a self drive safari, where and you travel in your own vehicle, and you will be joined by photographic guide on tuition sessions. We will be based at Nossob Camp, situated in the dry river bed which it is named after, about 150km north of Twee Rivieren, the main camp. This is a self catering safari, therefore you need to bring your own food and drinks. The first and last nights will be spent in Twee Rivieren.
There will be daily photographic tuition sessions were you will have the opportunity to learn how exactly to set up your camera. Time spent in the field with your expert photographer guide will help you capture unique images. There will also be tuition sessions behind the computer to improve your image post processing skills.
The Nossob riverbed offers great opportunities to photograph a multitude of birds and animals! Raptors are plentiful and are most often seen in the early morning when they sun themselves in the numerous dead trees that skirts the banks of the dry riverbeds. It’s not uncommon to encounter and photograph Bateleurs, Tawny Eagles and Black-chested Snake-eagles during one morning drive. The well-known Qubitje Quap waterhole 10km north of Nossob attracts large flocks of doves and sandgrouse usually congregate there from midmorning onward to quench their thirst. This is the ideal opportunity for Lanner Falcons to practise their hunting technique and it is not unusual to see a number of these birds having a go at snatching a dove or sandgrouse in amongst a flying frenzy as birds come and go to the water. Spending time at this water hole is not only entertaining but also provides ample opportunities to get some really great images of these birds in action – you might even be lucky to photograph that lanner falcon striking a sandgrouse in midair!
If it’s mammals you are after the opportunities are also ample, whether it is a herd of springbok etched against a sand dune in the late afternoon light or a Cheetah with her cubs next to your vehicle. The chances for Lion are always there, and the late afternoon drive in the popular Marie’s Loop usually offers opportunities on Gemsbok, Red Hartebeest, Springbok and Black-backed Jackal, particularly at the well-known Marie-se-gat waterhole. We will be staying in a comfortable chalet and guest house in Nossob Camp. The camp grounds also offer some great photographic opportunities. Sociable Weavers, White-browed Sparrow-Weaver, Crimson-breasted Shrikes and Swallow-tailed Bee-eaters are all fairly common in the around camp. At night Barn Owls and White-faced Scops Owls are around and they can provide good opportunities for flash photography!
